HOLISTIC WOMEN’S HEALTH

I first met our Inspiring Healer, Pilar Chandler, about 15 years ago when she gave me a massage. I knew from the first moment she put her hands on me, that she had what I called “magic hands”– The hands of a true healer. She has worked on all of us, including my children (I wouldn’t trust just anyone with them) and has brought much pain relief, relaxation and peace to our lives. Since then, Pilar has studied Ayurveda, Obstetrics, Herbalism and has become certified as a midwife and yoga instructor. Behind her quiet, soft demeanor is a strong woman (a single mom who raised her daughter in a beautiful, kind way ) and pushed her way through years of education to start a practice that honors and celebrates women’s health (physically, emotionally, and spiritually). I am happy to introduce you to our Inspiring Healer, Pilar Chandler.

“The ultimate goal in Ayurveda is to support people, ease their physical & mental suffering so that they can live their best life & ultimately find peace & enlightenment.”

INTERVIEW WITH INSPIRING HEALER PILAR CHANDLER

PLEASE TELL US WHAT YOU DO AND WHAT YOUR LIFE’S MISSION IS?

I am a Holistic Women’s Health Specialist, I help women with all things reproductive & sexual health, from your first period to menopause & everything inbetween.

My mission & life’s goal is to support & empower women in their embodied awareness & healing. I believe when a woman is cycling smoothly, orgasming regularly, conceiving when you want, birthing with relative ease & sliding into menopause like the Queen She Is, then a collective shift on the planet with respect & equality can lead to peace & sustainability. Women are encoded with Goddess potential, compassion & life-supporting qualities. When that is recognized, heard & respected then we can begin to heal as the human race.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS KNOWN YOU WOULD BE A HEALER?

I suppose so, there are definitely certain skills that I have learned to help facilitate healing in others, but I would say in its essence, it’s intrinsic, like the fact that I have green eyes and brown hair. It came with the package. I was a VERY sensitive & empathic child. It was really difficult to understand & eventually liberating to learn how to differentiate.

IN SIMPLE TERMS, PLEASE TELL US WHAT AYURVEDA IS? DO YOU COMBINE IT WITH OTHER HEALING MODALITIES?

Ayurveda is literally the science of living. It is traditional Indian medicine & has been around for over 5000 years. Finally today our modern science is just now proving theories that Ayurveda has known for multiple millennia. Ayurveda & Yoga come from the same source, Ayurveda is the healing side of Yoga & you cannot effectively have one without the other. Basically, it is an elemental science, we (practitioners) look at each person as an individual. We look at the elements in the body, things like hot, cold, hard, soft, wet, dry, etc. How do those elements manifest in each individual & then how does that unique individual interact with the external environment (like where & how do you live your life). We look deeply for the cause of the dis-ease & aim to treat that, not just adding something to cover a symptom.

I absolutely blend it with other modalities. Most people just want to feel better. They may not necessarily want to know what lense I am looking through. It is a very adaptable system to incorporate. It’s roots are in India, but it’s essence is universal.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT HOW YOU TREAT YOUR PATIENTS/CLIENTS?

I think everything I do is unique in my treatments & methods. When someone is a new client & comes in we spend hours looking at their health history (family health, digestive, reproductive, emotional / mental health, etc.). Then depending on what their particular health goals or concerns we do a body-mapping session. It feels like a massage to you, but to me it’s another invaluable diagnostic tool. There is a lot of information I get from touching a person that may not come out on paper. What I am looking for in all that is “what is the cause”? It’s either  digestive / diet related, lifestyle or structural / physical, or 2 or more. From there we can discuss your treatment plan.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda was in the background of my life for many years before I decided to study it formally. I started practicing yoga as a teenager & found traditional Yoga philosophy as a spiritual path in my 20’s. I worked with my first mentor as her Pancha Karma massage therapist & she really encouraged me to study it. But it still wasn’t until years later when I was looking to expand my skill set from a massage therapist & Holistic Health Practitioner. I explored Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Naturopathic Medicine, but Ayurveda was the only one that had a deep & strong spiritual component. The ultimate goal in Ayurveda is to support people, ease their physical & mental suffering so that they can live their best life & ultimately find peace & enlightenment. Like that is literally one of the 4 aims of Ayurveda! How beautiful is that? How could I possibly pick anything else?

Ayurveda continues to teach me daily. I am constantly learning, growing  & evolving as a human & a practitioner.

WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING A PERSON CAN DO FOR THEIR HEALTH?

ONE thing? That really would depend on the person, some need rest, some need water, some need movement.  I would say for most it’s sleep, water, exercise. But there is no ONE answer for all.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND BEAUTY? WHICH PRODUCTS CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

You know, because my life path gifted me with a child at 20 years old, I’ve lived a pretty low-key lifestyle that has only supported my health & vibrancy. I’ve never been a big alcohol or coffee drinker or smoker, I’m in bed early & up early & I’ve been mainly a vegetarian for 30+ years. I have lived a very low-tox life, with organic foods & natural body-care & cleaners. The best beauty products are in your kitchen, keep it clean, organic & plant based. Take a serious look at the products you touch everyday. Your skin absorbs everything & those chemical cleaners & synthetic fragrances are major hormonal disruptors.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS A PERSON SHOULD DO EACH DAY TO STAY HEALTHY? (ESPECIALLY SINCE WE ARE DEALING WITH COVID-19)

Hydrate… I drink 32oz of warm water with ½ a lemon & ½ teaspoon of good salt. Ultimately your body needs ½ your (ideal) body weight in ounces (this changes if you drink anything caffeinated).

Walk or some type of movement everyday. Your lymphatic system can only move when you move. It doesn’t have a pump like your heart for the circulatory system. Your lymphatic system plays a major role in your immunity, mental health, hormonal health & so much more.

Do whatever you can to stay present & calm; yoga, breathwork, painting or creating. I know it is incredibly difficult, but do try to stay away from those things that feel good in the moment but do more damage that good, like alcohol.

BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT HEALTH?

There are SO many measures for “health”; organic, low fat, low carb, vegan, keto, gluten free, etc. But if you are not digesting well then it doesn’t matter what you’re eating because it’s creating a toxic load in your body. Bloating, gas, constipation, loose stools, heartburn or a white coating on your tongue are just some signs that you’re not digesting your food properly. Other Signs can be general inflammation, sluggishness, depression, hormonal imbalances, & so on.

RIGHT NOW, MORE THAN EVER (COVID-19), PEOPLE ARE SCARED AND FEARFUL ABOUT THE FUTURE. WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO STAY SAFE?

Honestly I wish I had the answer. I know everytime I try to plan or strategize it spins me into anxiety. I have to stay present with the day and the information at hand. There’s no way I could have imagined this… so how could I possibly imagine what it will look like next. I try to focus on what positive changes I would like to see come from this. The world pre-covid world was good for some & not good for many many more. I would like to imagine & then create a better world with a more inclusive health care system. One that was focused on health & prevention.

IS THERE LESSON IN THIS SITUATION (QUARANTINE BECAUSE OF COVID-19) THAT WE MAY BE MISSING?

The simple things in life are WAY more important. We were pushing ourselves & our children WAY too hard.

DO YOU EVER GET FEARFUL? WHAT HELPS YOU THROUGH THAT EMOTION?

Of course I get fearful, it’s hard not to right now. My favorite tools are flower essences, my sadhana (spiritual practice) & my dog is a lifesaver!

CAN YOU SUGGEST A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO CENTER THEMSELVES?

I love dance, I often need to get out of my head and into my body. That shifts the mood the fastest for me. Slow or fast movements. Changing my environment also helps change my headspace. Go outside for a walk, get into nature. She is the best healer. Pranayama or breathwork is great too… or just a simple cup of tea.
